Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP): a Threat to Democracy

Nicola Spanu – The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) represents one of the biggest threats to national sovereignty, because it allows corporations to sue governments before an arbitration panel made up of corporate lawyers, thus bypassing completely the judicial system of the state in which they operate, which, it must be pointed out, is the expression of the legislative activity of national parliaments. As the author of the article, George Monbiot, points out, some governments, such as the British one, are actively lobbying in favour of the TTIP, which seems instead to be opposed by the newly elected president of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker, probably influenced by the lack of enthusiasm for the TTIP shown by the German government. What counts, though, is that the public opposition to the TTIP is growing: the STOP TTIP petition (https://stop-ttip.org/) has been signed by more than 750.000 people, while the petition to the EU to stop the TTIP (https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/eu-ttip-petition#petition) has reached almost one million signatures! These are certainly encouraging news, which must give courage to all those who fight against attributing legal efficacy to the decisions of cliques of non-elected technocrats who in many cases used to work for the same corporations that they now should judge.
